Leicester Longwool Sheep Fleece Rug
I made this Leicester Longwool Fleece into a lovely rug with long curly locks. Leicester Longwool fleece have long strong locks and are a very heavy fleece. This rug has still got a sheep marker paint spot on it. I like my rugs to be like they are on the sheep, so if the marker does not come out int the process of making it into a rug or washing afterwards, I leave it, it is what happens in a sheep’s life.
Leicester Longwood Sheep
Leicester Longwool sheep have long thinner locks than a Lincoln long wool. The fleece is still a heavy fleece. It is a very strong fleece. Leicester long wool sheep were originally bred from a Lincoln long wool and Ryeland, both lovely fleece in their own right. Learn more about Leicester Longwool sheep from the Leicester Longwool Organisation.
The sheep must be shorn every summer to keep the sheep cool and help prevent blow fly strike. I buy quality fleece from pet sheep owners and use a process called wet felting to felt a backing. As a result it is similar to a sheepskin rug, but far better for the sheep!
Because the sheep live outside all year round, the item could contain tiny pieces of grass, it is impossible to get every tiny piece out. It might initially shed a small amount of fleece.
